Popular because they squeeze a bit more efficiency from a given driver than sealed designs, ported cabinets can be made to sound excellent. Bass rolls off at a steep 24db per octave and building these could take some trial and error for best results. Fortunately, online programs like WinISD can remove much of the guesswork from your projects. I have a ported design in my bedroom and enjoy the bouncy bass it produces. Ported cabinets are a good compromise when you want just enough bass so that you don’t have to include a separate subwoofer in your room.
